My early spring trip to India has become a yearly excursion that always brings inspiration. This March visit included stops in Varanasi, Jaipur and Sitapur.

Varanasi, located in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is regarded as spiritual capital of India and dates to the 11th century B.C. For rug buyers, it remains the largest rug-producing city in India, so a treasure trove of discoveries is just waiting to be found.

Jaipur, known as the Pink City for its trademark building color, is the largest city and capital of India’s Rajasthan state, which was founded 1727. Jaipur also happens to be home to the most varied and expansive amount of high-end and decorative rugs, so it’s always on my yearly list of must-see destinations.

Also located in Uttar Pradesh, Sitapur is famous for its historical and religious heritage, offering significant religious tourist spots and holy shrines. Lucky for us, one of our suppliers is based there, specializing in flatweave rugs that have an incredible array of textures and qualities. We spotted some gems that we are excited to share with you.

The trip ended with a visit to the India Carpet Expo in New Delhi, organized by the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC). It’s a small but important show, with between 250-300 exhibitors. Carpet materials, packaging, and finished handmade carpets are among the displays. There, I met with many established reliable sources, but more importantly, I met more than a half dozen new suppliers from which we will place orders. Overall, a very productive trip, with new treasures to be shared soon. Stay tuned!
